Mike Yates signed with the Stampede after a five-game tryout in December 1998 and appeared in 48 games as a wing during the 1998-99 season. He recorded 7 goals, 6 assists, and 13 points while accumulating 92 penalty minutes. The Stampede finished 33-24-12 that year and made the playoffs for a third consecutive time, but Yates was left unprotected for the WPHL expansion draft in May 1999.
