Matt Brenner was a right-shooting defenseman who appeared in all five of the Stampede's seasons, logging 230 games — more than any other player on the blue line across the franchise's full run. He contributed steadily on the back end, finishing with 56 points and 173 penalty minutes over his career in Belton.

Brenner was one of eight players re-signed ahead of the 1997-98 season and earned recognition that year as the runner-up for the WPHL Man of the Year award. He scored a key goal during the 1997 playoff series against New Mexico, and his name surfaced in game accounts through the final season. He missed time in 1998-99 before a transfer to Amarillo and returned for the 1999-2000 divisional championship year, his most productive full campaign back with the club. The Stampede's last season ended mid-stream in January 2001, with Brenner still in uniform.
