Mark Dawkins joined the Stampede in the summer of 1997 as a signed replacement after the departure of Daniel Berthiaume. He came in carrying a .926 save percentage and a 15-2-1 record from the previous season, including two shutouts. Head coach Bob Bourne saw him as a strong fit, noting his size and his ability to play his angles well.
Dawkins appeared in six games during the Stampede's 1997–98 season, finishing 1-1-2 with a 2.91 GAA and a .913 save percentage. He shared the crease that year as one of multiple goaltenders on the roster. The Stampede went on to post 40 wins and reach the playoffs for a second consecutive spring.
