Layne Roland was the Stampede's most productive skater across the club's first two WPHL seasons, finishing his time in Belton with 61 goals, 49 assists, and 110 points in 91 games. He arrived for the franchise's inaugural 1996–97 season and posted 15 points in 22 games, then broke out emphatically in 1997–98, when he put up 53 goals and 42 assists for 95 points in 69 games — numbers that placed him among the league's elite scorers. At the midpoint of that second season he led the Stampede with 49 points and 24 goals and was selected to the WPHL Eastern All-Star team. Three weeks into the year he was already tied for first in the league in goals with 12. When teammate Doug Smith served a six-game suspension late in the season, Roland stepped up, notching seven goals and five assists in Smith's absence to help the Stampede reverse a six-game losing streak. He was part of a forward line with Doug Smith and Alex Rummo that combined for 38 goals and 36 assists through the first 20 games of 1997–98.
