Larry Dyck served as the Stampede's starting goaltender in the 1997–98 season, posting a 21-12-1 record with a .899 save percentage and one shutout in 35 appearances. Sharing the crease with Greg Smith, Dyck helped Central Texas hold opponents to around 3.20 goals per game through the first half of the season during a four-game winning streak that pushed the club to 40 wins and 86 points overall. Named to the Eastern All-Star team as a non-starter at midseason, Dyck took the ice in the first-round playoff series against Shreveport, where he faced WPHL Outstanding Goaltender Kevin St. Pierre. The Stampede's postseason run ended in the quarterfinals.
