John Murgatroyd spent the 1998-99 season as a center for the Central Texas Stampede, contributing 22 goals and 22 assists for 44 points in 63 games, along with 112 penalty minutes. He proved capable of coming up big in the clutch: in a January win over Austin, he scored three goals in the final ten minutes of the third period to complete a hat trick. He also scored twice in a 6-2 road demolition of Tupelo and picked up two points in a victory over first-place Waco. Murgatroyd was among the first players re-signed for the following season, inking his deal in April 1999 before the team had even finalized its schedule.
