Jim Peters was a left-shooting defenseman who played the Stampede's entire inaugural 1996-97 season, posting 13 goals, 18 assists, and 31 points in 37 games — a standout offensive output for a blueliner — along with 75 penalty minutes. He opened the scoring in the franchise's largest crowd to that point, a 7-2 rout of New Mexico on December 26, assisting Doug Smith's first-period goal before adding one of his own on a five-on-three power play. The following week he turned in a hat trick against the Amarillo Rattlers, the second hat-trick performance in Stampede history, and earned player-of-the-week honors that same stretch. Peters was selected 13th overall in the WPHL expansion draft after the season, departing a Stampede club that had reached the inaugural President's Cup Final.
