Jason Collins centered the Stampede's lineup during the franchise's inaugural 1996–97 season, appearing in all 55 of his games and finishing with 14 goals, 23 assists, and 37 points. He was one of eight Stampede players named to the Eastern All-Star squad at mid-season. His speed was considered one of his defining traits — when the WPHL expansion draft claimed him as the third overall pick, sending him to Monroe, coach Bob Bourne singled out the loss to the club's quickness. Collins had scored two goals in a November road win over Amarillo and added another in a four-game winning streak against the Rattlers in January, contributing to a season that ended with a run to the inaugural President's Cup Final.
