Gary Coupal was a right wing who spent two seasons with the Central Texas Stampede, bringing a physical edge to both rosters he was part of. In his first year, 1997–98, he appeared in 20 games and put up 79 penalty minutes while the Stampede posted 40 wins under coach Lee Norwood. He came into his own the following season, playing 52 games and tallying 12 goals, 10 assists, and 251 PIM — the latter figure placing him among the team's penalty leaders. By mid-December 1998 he ranked third on the club in penalty minutes and had found the scoresheet in a 6–2 road win over the Tupelo T-Rex. He finished his Stampede career with 330 PIM across 72 games. After the 1998–99 season, the club traded him to the Tupelo T-Rex for future considerations.
