Dean Kolstad was a 6'6″, 230-pound defenseman who anchored the Stampede blue line across the club's first two WPHL seasons. He was part of the inaugural 1996–97 roster and earned a starting spot on the East squad at the first WPHL All-Star Game, voted in by media and team representatives. In his abbreviated first season he posted 12 points and 44 PIM in 17 games, then broke out in 1997–98 with 14 goals and 59 assists for 73 points in 66 games — numbers that again earned him a starting berth on the Eastern All-Star team. His career totals of 16 goals and 85 points over 83 games ranked him among the more productive offensive defensemen in Stampede history. He re-signed for the second season after talks with Bob Bourne carried into the summer.
