David Oliver played one season as a forward for the Central Texas Stampede in 1998–99, appearing in all 67 games and finishing with 22 goals, 45 assists, and 67 points. His most defining number, however, was 357 penalty minutes — the most in the WPHL that season. By mid-December he already led the team with 104 PIM, and a March report noted he was on pace to break the league record for penalty minutes and major penalties. He contributed on the scoresheet as well, logging multi-point efforts in wins over Waco and Austin. After the season, Oliver played a short series in the American Hockey League, picking up 29 more penalty minutes in four games.
