Darren Dougan arrived in Belton midseason in 1998-99, acquired from Monroe in a trade that sent forward Josh Boni the other way. The center stepped into a productive role immediately, leading the Stampede in assists with 34 at the time of the trade deadline and finishing the season with 53 points in just 31 games — good enough to land him among the WPHL's top ten point leaders. The Belton Journal noted he ranked fifteenth overall in the league with 75 points at one late-season checkpoint and sat third in assists. He posted four-point outings in back-to-back weekend games against Alexandria and Arkansas in late February and contributed multiple points in key late-season wins over Waco and Austin that helped clinch a third consecutive playoff berth. The Stampede protected him in the offseason expansion draft alongside Gerald Tallaire and defenseman Jamie Pegg.
