Chris Johnston played left wing for the Central Texas Stampede across the franchise's final two seasons, and his numbers ranked among the most productive in team history. In 1999-2000 he put up 41 goals, 54 assists, and 95 points in 61 games — a pace that made him the Stampede's leading goal scorer during a 50-win campaign that claimed the Central Division title. He added 152 penalty minutes that season, a mark that reflected his physical presence at 6'4″ and 210 pounds. A newspaper photo from that playoff run showed him battling for a faceoff during third-round action against the Shreveport Mudbugs, with Gerald Tallaire at his side.
A mid-season stint on injured reserve slowed him in the back half of 1999-2000, but he returned and was among the players re-signed for the 2000-01 year. He appeared in all 38 games before the franchise folded in January 2001, finishing his Stampede career with 59 goals, 73 assists, and 132 points across 99 games.
